Investigative Bootcamp: Regional media to undergo 5 days of deep-dive investigative training

Five days of intensive theory and practice, experience sharing, teamwork, and deep immersion into investigative journalism methods — that’s what awaits selected participants of the Investigative Bootcamp, part of the «Stronger Together: Transparency and Anti-Corruption» program.

In times of full-scale war, quality journalism — especially investigative — becomes even more critical. Regional media are often the first to record violations, corruption schemes, and abuse of power. Investing in their professionalism is therefore an investment in transparency, accountability, and justice at the local level.

Strengthening the investigative capacity of independent regional media is the core goal of the «Stronger Together: Transparency and Anti-Corruption» program. A total of 18 newsrooms from across Ukraine have been selected to take part in the project.

The program is implemented by the Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine in partnership with the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Norwegian Media Businesses’ Association (MBL), with support from Norway. It is designed to provide participants not only with knowledge, but also with systematic support, mentorship, and financial resources to carry out their own investigations.

The first step in the program will be the Investigative Bootcamp, taking place on July 8–12 in Lviv.

The agenda includes:

  • Public interest in investigations, finding topics and working with sources — Anastasiia Usenko, Bihus.Info
  • Legal risks: how to avoid mistakes and work safely — Nataliia Lazarovych, Bihus.Info
  • Working with YouControl: how to identify business partners through documentation — Maksym Opanasenko, Bihus.Info
  • Analyzing asset declarations, signs of illicit enrichment, officials’ business ties, working with registers, administrative service centers, and paper records — Nataliia Onyshko, NGL.media
  • Investigating public procurement and financial flows via BI Prozorro, Clarity, E-data, etc. — Oleksandra Hubytska, NGL.media
  • Court registers (Ukrainian and international), analysis of criminal cases, high-profile investigations — Alisa Yurchenko, The Kyiv Independent

The Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) team will carefully document all the most important knowledge, methods, and insights shared during the training sessions — and will be sure to pass on the most valuable cases to their followers. Don’t miss out, as our mission is to strengthen regional media and support journalism communities in their pursuit of transparency and justice.

We place special emphasis on developing investigative journalism, as it remains one of the most powerful tools for holding authorities accountable and defending community interests — especially in times of full-scale war.

«We believe that supporting investigative journalism in the regions is an investment in a strong civil society. Our task is not only to provide knowledge, but also to create a sustainable support environment where newsrooms can confidently tackle complex topics», — says Oksana Brovko, CEO of the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine.

The program Stronger Together: Media and Democracy is implemented by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in partnership with the Association «Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine» (AIRPPU) and the Norwegian Media Businesses’ Association (MBL) — with the support of Norway.
