Building «Media Bridges»: Finland and Ukraine. Selecting 10 regional media outlets for the project

Ukrainian media play a crucial role in combating fake news and disinformation in a world where information spreads instantly. Media self-regulation is not only a tool for maintaining professional standards but also a cornerstone of trust in journalists, a key value, especially during a full-scale war.

At the start of the new year, the Association «Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine» is launching a new project: Media Bridges: Finland and Ukraine. Running for two years, the initiative has brought together leading Finnish media outlets, including Helsingin SanomatLapin Kansa, and JSN, alongside News Media Finland, to provide expert support in strengthening Ukrainian regional media.

We are now announcing the selection of independent regional Ukrainian media teams to join our educational program.

— Self-regulation is the foundation of professional journalism, — says Oksana Brovko, СEO of the Association. — It helps media develop internal standards, establish ethical principles, and demonstrate responsibility to their audiences. We are pleased that our Finnish partners, with extensive experience in building independent journalism, are ready to share their knowledge. This collaboration will empower Ukrainian media, enhance professional ethics, and enable adaptation to contemporary challenges.

What Will Participants Gain from the Project?

  • Monthly online meetings with Finnish media experts: workshops, exchange of experiences, and idea-sharing sessions.
  • Educational trips to Helsingin Sanomat (Helsinki) and Lapin Kansa (Lapland).
  • €3,000 grant for an informational campaign on media self-regulation.

— The primary goal of this project is to help regional media adapt to the challenging conditions of war, enhance professional ethics, and explore sustainable business models, — adds Oksana Brovko. Over two years, we plan to strengthen the ties between Ukrainian and Finnish media, laying the groundwork for long-term collaboration.
